According to legend, in the 17th century, there was a poor monk living in a small temple in Tokyo. Despite his hardships, he shared his meager meals with his beloved cat named Tama. One day, Lord Nakaota from Hikone District was caught in a heavy storm while hunting. Seeking shelter under an old tree near the temple, he suddenly saw a cat raising one paw, as if inviting him into the temple. Astonished, the lord moved away from the tree to get a better look at the cat. At that very moment, a bolt of lightning struck the tree he had just been standing under.

Grateful for narrowly escaping death, the lord sponsored the repair of the temple to express his gratitude to the cat. In 1697, the small temple was renamed Gotokuji. After Tama’s death, he was buried in a special cat cemetery within the temple. In honor of the lucky cat, the locals created Maneki Neko statues, which are now displayed in homes, businesses, and shops.

Before long, Maneki Neko statues became a popular phenomenon in countries like China and Vietnam. Thus, the Lucky Cat became a cherished symbol among the Japanese, particularly favored by business people. A common saying goes, “When a cat washes its face over its ears, it means guests are coming,” implying that cats draw customers and bring wealth to the owner.
